1. Set Long-Term and Short-Term Goals
Long-Term:
- Long-term goals include anything that you want to achieve in the future, at least a year from now
- Is there a particular place that you want to intern next year?
- Think of attorneys, judges, or other students that you would like to form a relationship with in the long-term
- Keep track of what you need to do to achieve long-term goals each month
- Picture what you see yourself doing ten years from now
Short-Term:
- Short-term goals include anything that you can achieve in the near future, whether that be in the next week, year, or month
- Do you want to update your resume?
- Participate in a pro-bono opportunity?
- Introduce yourself to a classmate or schedule a meeting with a professor
2. Prioritize Your Goals
- Decide what is most important to you right now
- Remember being flexible is crucial! As you achieve your goals, you will likely have to adjust other long-term goals
3. Reach Out
- Don't be afraid to reach out to any connections you have made in the past
- Send an email or nice letter asking to get lunch or coffee
- Follow up with thank you letters
4. Attend Networking Events
- Consider joining a student organization
- Attend networking events and speak with other students
- Introduce yourself and be prepared to talk about your goals, interests, and any previous career achievements
